Four Paws Reiki Frequently Asked Questions
1) What might my pet experience during a session?
While each session is different and each animal responds differently, there are some common things they may experience. Some animals feel very little where as others may feel gentle tingling, warmth, cooling, slight heaviness, slight vibration, or complete relaxation (to the point of falling asleep). Sometimes, the animal may cough, yawn, stretch, lick the area, have stomach gurgling, or some minor involuntary movements. These are all signs that a blockage is being released and are positive signs that the treatment is effective. During a session, the animal may feel the need to move closer to or further away from the Reiki practitioner. This is their way of controlling how much energy they are receiving. After the session, your animal may be very sleepy, calm, and relaxed or they could feel more energized if they are feeling better. Either way, make sure to have lots of fresh water available as the animal may feel extra thirsty after the session is completed. Water helps flush the physical body after energy work.
2) What are Reiki symbols and what are they used for?
Reiki symbols are tools to direct and focus the energy. Each symbol has a different meaning. The Reiki practitioner uses some symbols to start the session and then may utilize several others during the session as they are intuitively guided. Some practitioners may draw the symbols in the air, others repeat the name quietly to themselves, and others use a combination of this.
3) You mention that the animal is in control of the session. How do you know when they don't wish to receive a treatment?
Whenever I start a session, I intuitively ask the animal for their permission. If I get a feeling of yes, I proceed. Sometimes, the animal will be unclear about what I am asking and I intuitively send thoughts and images of what a Reiki session is. I explain that they are really in control of how much energy they receive. Usually, at that point, I will get a yes but feel the energy running very slowly until the animal realizes what Reiki is. Then, they usually move closer or allow the energy to run much more freely.
Some signs that the animal has had enough or does not wish to receive Reiki are the animal growling, hissing, or moving away. If I get a strong intuitive "NO" or other information that the animal does not wish to receive treatment at that time, I always respect that and will try again at another time. Often, when I re-approach, the animal is much more willing to accept.
4) Is Reiki safe and is there ever a time when Reiki should not be done?
Reiki is completely natural and safe and can even be used on a pregnant animal and fetus. Reiki energy flows where needed and can do no harm! This is also one of the reasons why the Reiki energy is offered not forced so the animal is always in control. Reiki is offered with the positive intention of helping the animal and therefore works similarly to a prayer request.
5) You talk about working for the animals highest good - what does that mean?
Reiki adjusts naturally to whatever the animal need and energy flows to the root of the issue or problem. Reiki works on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies of the animal and always helps on some level even if the results are not seen physically. So, the outcome of the session may be different than either the animal or the Reiki practitioner are expecting. Sometimes, the results occur only at the cellular, or emotional levels and may not be "seen" by the human companion. A Reiki healing works on only what serves the highest good of the animal.
6) When should I expect results?
While Reiki can and often does produce immediate results, many times the results are slow and gradual. The results of Reiki are cumulative and with subsequent sessions, more results should be readily seen. There is no guarantee that you will notice extreme changes in your animal. If there is a lesson for the souls involved to learn, Reiki can not change this.
7) I have never experienced Reiki or energy healing, does that impede the effectiveness of what you do?
Reiki does not require a belief system to be effective. As long as you and/or the animal are willing to accept help in it's simplest form, Reiki will be effective. However, if you approach it with severe skepticism, you are less likely to notice some of the subtle changes in your animal as a result of receiving Reiki.
8) Why do animal sessions not require the same amount of time as a Reiki session for a human?
Animals are much more connected to Mother Nature and their true essence. They do not over think or try to dis-prove the Reiki energy. Because of this, the Reiki energy can work more efficiently.
9) Will Reiki prevent my animal from dying?
No. Unfortunately, all physical life ages and deteriorates at some time. Reiki is not a miracle cure and can not reverse severe tissue trauma or degeneration. What Reiki can do is ease pain, discomfort, ease the transition, and prepare the animal spiritually if they are truly at the end of their life. Reiki may improve quality of life until it is time for the animal to pass and can help make the passing easier on everyone. Reiki can also help the animal companions make important decisions during this time and deal with the grief if the animal does pass.
10) What is the difference between a session for an ill animal and a wellness/preventive session?
If your animal is ill, the session will work through all of the chakras just like a preventative session. There will just be a much greater focus on the root cause of the illness, reducing the symptoms, and enhancing the effectiveness of veterinary care. There is no additional cost if the session is for a medical illness, it is just a different level of healing.
11) Why does having a picture of the animal help when doing remote sessions?
I can connect to your animal just through the information you provide such as name, age, gender, and description. However, I can connect more quickly, easily, and definitively if I have a photo of the animal. This way, I am not just trying to tune into their energy signature, but can connect by looking in their eyes, etc. Also, my understanding of your description might be different than what you intended and thus make the initial connection a little more difficult.
12) Are you insured?
Yes, I am insured through the Hands On Trade Association. If you would like more information regarding this, please contact me.
13) Why do you specialize in animal Reiki and can you work with people?
All of my training for my Reiki Master was done with human people. I certainly can do sessions for a person, I just choose to specialize with animals. I chose this because I have always wanted to help animals in need and feel I have a special connection with so many animals. It is my way of giving back to a group that is often under represented in today's society. I also feel if I can help the animal, I am also helping the caretaker. If you are interested in a session for yourself to help with the grief of an animal passing, help clear your emotions to make better decisions for your animal, and/or for any other reason, please feel free to contact me.
14) What type of Reiki are you certified in?
There are many different types of Reiki training available. I am certified in Usui Reiki. I chose this type of Reiki because it is more intuitively guided than many other types of Reiki. All different types of Reiki are effective, there are just slight differences in how the practitioner connects with the energy or how a session progresses. I like this type of Reiki since the symbols and flow are a guideline, which lets me focus on wherever I am drawn to work.
17) Is remote Reiki as effective as an in person session?
Absolutely. There is no difference in outcomes whether the session is given in person or across the world. Sometimes, the remote may even be more beneficial because there is no external "stress" on the animal (such as having someone new in the house). In Daniel J. Benor's article "Distance Healing" he states "distance, even thousands of miles does not appear to limit the effects of healing". You can read more here: http://www.equilibrium-e3.com/images/PDF/DISTANT%20HEALING%20by%20Daniel%20J.%20Benor%20MD.pdf
18) Is Reiki invasive?
No. Reiki is often given through just a light touch on certain areas of the body or through thought intention. It also can be offered from a distance as mentioned above.
19) Do you need any equipment to perform Reiki?
No. It is helpful to have a quiet space where the Reiki can be given. Sometimes I will use some crystals to help boost the energy, but Reiki can be done without either of those.
20) Is there a multi-session discount?
Yes there is. If you buy four sessions, you get one free! If you have multiple animals in one location that you would like Reiki for, please contact me to discuss additional pricing options.
21) You talk about animals experiencing emotions. Can you explain?
I believe if you have ever spent time getting to know an animal you are aware of their moods and emotions. I know there are times my cat is thrilled to see me and times when he is upset and won't come near me (especially after having been away for a few days, etc.. I also know he acted very differently for about a week after his brother passed on which to me indicates grief. If you search the internet, you can find many different articles and videos showing animals reactions to things. If you look closely at their face, eyes and/or body language, it can tell you as much as any human non-verbal interaction.
22) What research is there to prove that Reiki is effective?
Reiki works individually and in alignment for that person's highest good which can be difficult to quantify. There are many articles and testimonials to it's effectiveness. Please refer to the Articles tab for links to some of these articles as well as some short excerpts and highlights.
23) Do you follow any sort of code of ethics?
Yes I do. Here is a link.

24) What is the difference between what you do and when people say "I will send Reiki" when someone is ill or in need?
Sometimes, Reiki practitioners will say "I am sending Reiki" as a way of sending an enhanced prayer and good wishes. This may be just as simple as a thought intention. It may also be running briefly through the Reiki symbols and sending Love, light, and healing. The Reiki practitioner may even spend 5 minutes or so doing a mini session focusing on one certain area.
What I do is a full healing session. This takes about an hour to complete and I spend a significant amount of time working with each Chakra/energy center. I am working to re-align and re-balance the person or animals energy flow and release any energy blockages. I also use my intuition and medical background to help guide the session. All of this allows a much deeper level of energy work to occur. At the end of each session, I can give a detailed description of what I found and worked on.
